Road Trip
by Janice C. Johnson
Pinewoods rise and fall
away behind us, giving ground
to prairie. The brown grass
reminds us it’s still winter.
Two sisters drive north.
In our mobile living room
we catch each other up
on high school gossip and married life.
We share sodas, snacks,
stacks of favorite tunes,
the steering wheel and map.
When did we learn to take turns?
We cross into Missouri.
Snow softens the outlines
of old familiar scenes.
Just another hour now.
Weathered uncles,
elderly bisque porcelain aunts.
An evening of hugs and chatter.
“It’s been years!” “Remember when?”
Next morning we gather
in your honor. I choose a seat
near a bouquet of feathery white mums.
Its one red rose draws my gaze.
Out in the countryside
we recall the Resurrection;
a veined hand clasps a young one,
a sturdy arm steals around thin shoulders.
We are not much troubled
by the impish, icy wind
that yanks at the tent
and races off around the stones.
~~~~~~~~~~
Today I am recalling the Resurrection.
I look forward to seeing my grandparents, Dad, Dad Johnson and Sis again.
For more thoughts on the season, join me for the Company Girls coffee party at Home Sanctuary.
Hi, Lauri,
I guess we are both more in tune with the good news of Easter this year.
Thanks for yet another beautiful road trip.
time goes by so fast it is good to reflect on things past.
