When I’m not bicycling, dealing with paperwork or thinking up ways to spoil our grandchildren, I’ve got a fiction series in the works. I owe you an update, which I promised some time ago.
So I finished drafting Book 1, got critical feedback on every chapter from other writers, and mailed it to a freelance editor that everyone recommended.
Then I watched the clock for a couple of weeks, forcing myself to start outlining Book 2, when I could look away from the clock long enough.
Finally the email arrived.
Editor: “Nice, clean draft!”
At that, my emotions went through the following set of gyrations:
1. Yay, she likes it!
2. Hm. “Clean.” Maybe it’s not that the story is good; maybe she only means she found very few errors.
3. Or even just that there weren’t coffee stains all over it.
4. Or maybe she actually does think it’s good.
5. Oh crud, if she thinks it’s good, does she really know what she’s doing??
Yessir, overconfidence is the least of my worries.
Within the next week she got the hard copy back to me, complete with her notes and suggestions. After letting the draft “rest” for a while (okay, several months, as we got New House ready and moved into it and got settled in), I read back through the whole thing. Somehow the tone of the story had strayed from my intended direction. Right now, I’m revising it and making it my own again.
Well, that’s what I’m up to now, working hard to produce a humorous fiction series that you’ll enjoy.
Thanks for reading,
Jan
Can’t wait to read your story.
